Middle school is a transition from junior to college, allowing students to develop their learning experiences
Middle School (yr 6 to yr 9)
Welcome to the CHCS Middle School page. Students in years 6 to 9 form a very important group of learners.
Our programs are designed to enable students to spend most of their time with their home class teacher. Each Middle School class has a core teacher who is responsible for teaching the majority of lessons including, Discipleship/Pastoral Care, English, History, SOSE topics, Digital Technologies and Health. There are also graded Mathematic classes to enable all students to be working in a group that meets their grade level and specific learning ability.
Classes spend time specifically working on social skills including Circle Work (Sue Roffey) and the Friendly Schools Plus program. Every second Friday morning the students have the opportunity to participate in a combined praise and worship time. This is a time when students sing & pray for one another.
Friday afternoons provide the opportunity for students to participate in pastoral care lessons. Activities in these lessons vary from competing in House groups through to listening to guest speakers. Students also have four Science lessons per week with a specialist teacher and a double Physical Education lesson with the physical education teacher.
We believe year six is the best year to transition students into secondary school routines and expectations. Our year six program specifically nurtures students in a primary style learning environment with the flexibility of option classes and specialist lessons. The four year middle school program aims to develop students in all areas in preparation for senior school expectations.
Year 9 (LED) - This is a specific curriculum geared to the needs of this year group. Year 9’s timetable allows students to develop skills through subjects such as Outdoor Skills and Agri Science. This year group has their own separate block on the campus which includes kitchen facilities.
We have four terms so we are able to offer students two elective subjects per semester. (A semester is for two terms) Students can choose from the following elective classes; Art, Aquaculture, Cooking, Community, Construction, Drama, Horticulture, Languages, Media, Mentees (Buddies), Music, Science & Technology and Textiles. This provides the opportunity for students to experience a variety of learning environments and acquire new skills.
Each year the year 6 class have a 2 night excursion to our state capital, Hobart, to learn more of it’s history. Every two years, the year 7 & 8 classes travel to Canberra as part of their Civics/History studies, where students are able to visit Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the Electoral Commission, the War Memorial and Questacon, just to name a few. Students enjoy the experience of traveling by boat, bus and plane.
After school tutoring is available on Monday afternoons. This includes academic tutoring for a range of subjects. Please contact the school for more details.
We really value parent involvement in Middle School and look forward to having parents or grandparents visit as regular or occasional helpers.
